Google+VR+AI+ Healthcare A Perfect Solution

"I am very interested in health care because I am obsessed with trying to do something for the greater benefit of this world, and the starting point is humanity."

With these words, Olivier Rabenschlag, creative director of Google, began to discuss why medical health is completely different from other industries in his career. Although he spent a lot of time in advertising, he felt that he was more interested in health care.

“Health care is more challenging. If you can eventually come up with a solution, this is very meaningful,” he said in a discussion at Columbia University Medical Center.

At Google, Rabenschlag has begun to see some creative solutions in the healthcare industry. For example, according to CNN, a VR head price of about $15 - Google Cardboard saved the newborns in Florida last year. As Rabenschlag pointed out, the child was born without a lung and one heart was missing. Although the surgeon at Nicklaus Children's Hospital wanted to see the baby's heart and lungs in three dimensions, the 3D printer was broken. So they resorted to Google Cardboard glasses.

Rabenschlag said: "Through the existing applications that have been discovered, we managed to convert all these images into VR-compatible images, allowing the team of surgeons to observe the child's heart through Google Carboard." Finally, the surgeon performed a successful operation. The baby survived.

Google has not only made breakthroughs in the field of virtual reality. Rabenschlag also talked about how technology giants are betting on "machine learning and artificial intelligence" to make things smarter and seamless, and more to predict models than to react models.

Rabenschlag said that VR, AI and Verily are doing things that can affect the development of the medical and health industry throughout the world.

Actually, Verily is the original life sciences department of Google X. Now it is a subsidiary company under Alphabet. It is mainly devoted to the research of life sciences and helps collect medical researchers to discover disease in advance by collecting a large number of samples. The company’s mission is to “integrate technology and life sciences and uncover new truths about health and disease.”

Verily has started to develop several projects, including the development of smart contact lenses with built-in glucose sensors in cooperation with Switzerland Novartis.

In addition, Verily is hoping to use AI technology to help the community eradicate pests, and in particular to reduce the deadly harm that a species called Aedes aegypti may cause to people. Verily is developing a project called "Exterminator" (Debug Project). Through debugging, researchers are looking for ways to eliminate and release sterile mosquitoes in order to reduce the spread of virus-borne mosquitoes and eradicate the disease.

Rabenschlag said: "Verily is trying to move from reactive medicine to active healthcare."

On a larger scale, Rabenschlag is full of hope for the future development of voice technology.

He said, "Voice technology is a two-way conversation. Two-way conversations are very important for medical consultation or discussion."

Currently, Google is further linking voice technology to the Google Expeditions project. People can use Google Cardboard to view a space or location 360 degrees.

Rabenschlag said: "It is a major breakthrough for patients to be able to talk to their own therapists on the ground. I think it is very important to have voice, vision, sound and movement through VR."
